Nobody Remembers the Food When the Mosquitoes Are Bad

You've planned the menu, set up the tables, and hung the string lights. But if your guests spend the whole evening swatting mosquitoes, that's what they'll remember. The good news: with a little planning, you can have a virtually mosquito-free outdoor event on Long Island.

2 Weeks Before Your Event

• Schedule a professional barrier treatment. A perimeter treatment before your event creates a treated zone that kills mosquitoes on contact and provides lasting protection. This is the single most effective step.
• Walk your property and eliminate standing water. Dump flower pot saucers, clean gutters, flip over unused containers, and address any low spots where water collects.

1 Week Before

• Mow and trim. Mosquitoes rest in tall grass and dense vegetation during the day. A fresh mow and hedge trim reduces resting habitat significantly.
• Clear around the party area. Remove any unnecessary clutter, stacked pots, or debris near where guests will gather.

Day Of

• Set up fans. Mosquitoes are weak flyers. Two or three oscillating fans around your seating area create air currents they can't navigate. This is one of the most underrated mosquito deterrents.
• Light citronella strategically. Citronella candles and torches provide modest repellency within a 3-4 foot radius. Line them around the perimeter of your seating area, not scattered randomly.
• Provide individual repellent. Keep a basket of individual insect repellent wipes near the entrance for guests who want extra protection.
• Time your event wisely. Mosquitoes are most active at dawn and dusk. If possible, schedule your event to start in the late afternoon so guests are seated and protected before peak mosquito hours.

What Doesn't Work

Bug zappers attract and kill beneficial insects but are largely ineffective against mosquitoes. Ultrasonic repellers have been repeatedly debunked in scientific studies. Tiki torches alone without other measures provide minimal protection. Wearing dark clothing actually attracts more mosquitoes — suggest light colors on your invitation!
