Anticoagulant bait does not work instantly. The mouse feeds, then carries on for several days before the dose takes effect, and it dies where it feels safest: inside a wall void, above a ceiling tile, under insulation. A poisoned rodent is slow and easy to catch, which makes it a preferred meal. Red-tailed hawks, screech owls, foxes and neighborhood cats all take rodents, and the dose goes with the meal. If you have owls on your property they are doing free rodent control every night. Bait works against them.
