Winged reproductives, usually on a warm day after rain. People mistake them for flying ants. A termite has straight antennae, a thick straight-sided body with no pinched waist, and four wings of equal length that extend well past the body. An ant has elbowed antennae, an obvious narrow waist, and front wings longer than the back pair.
Pencil-width tunnels of soil running up a foundation, a pier, or the inside of a crawlspace. This is the colony travelling under cover between the soil and your framing. Nothing else builds one, so a mud tube is not ambiguous.
A small pile of coarse sawdust mixed with insect parts under a sill or baseboard is frass, and that means carpenter ants, not termites. Carpenter ants excavate wood and push the debris out. Termites eat it and leave mud. The two are completely different programs at completely different prices.
