You Are Looking at the Delivery Drivers, Not the Warehouse

When ants show up on a kitchen counter, the natural assumption is that they live somewhere nearby, behind the dishwasher or under the sink. Usually they do not. The foraging ants you can see are a small share of the colony, sent out to find food and carry it home. Home is generally outside: under a paver, in a landscape timber, beneath the mulch against your foundation, inside a section of wall framing that got wet years ago.

That single fact explains why the store-bought approach fails. You can kill every ant on the counter tonight and have the same number tomorrow, because you removed the couriers and left the operation running.

The Mistake That Makes It Worse

Odorous house ants are the most common indoor ant we see on Long Island. Crush one and it smells faintly of coconut or blue cheese, which is where the name comes from. They also do something inconvenient when threatened: they bud.

A stressed odorous house ant colony can split, with satellite groups leaving to establish new nests elsewhere. Spraying a visible trail with a contact killer is exactly the kind of stress that triggers it. People who spray a trail every night for two weeks often end up with ants in three rooms instead of one, and they have no idea they caused it.

Baiting works the opposite way. A slow-acting bait gets carried back and shared through the colony before it takes effect, which is the only version of this that reaches the ants you cannot see.

Which Ant You Have Changes the Answer

• Carpenter ants. The big ones, often black, sometimes with a red thorax. They do not eat wood, they excavate it to nest, and they strongly prefer wood that is already damp or damaged. A carpenter ant problem is frequently a moisture problem wearing a costume. Look for a leaking gutter, a failed flashing, a deck ledger that stays wet.
• Odorous house ants. Small, dark, fast, and the ones most likely to end up in a sugar bowl. Prone to budding, as above.
• Pavement ants. The ones pushing little soil piles up through driveway and walkway cracks. They nest under slabs and come in at the expansion joint.
• Acrobat ants. They raise the abdomen over the head when disturbed. They also favor wood that something else already damaged, and they will run insulation and utility lines to get inside.

Those four need different bait formulations and different placement. A company that treats all of them the same way is guessing, and you will find out in about three weeks.

What You Can Do Yourself, at No Cost

• Pull mulch back so it is not piled against the foundation. Mulch touching siding is a highway.
• Cut back branches and shrubs that touch the roof or the walls. Ants use them as bridges and skip your foundation entirely.
• Fix the moisture. A dripping hose bib, a clogged gutter, or a downspout dumping at the foundation will keep producing carpenter ant habitat no matter what anyone sprays.
• Stop spraying the trail. If you want to clean it, use soapy water, which removes the pheromone path without scattering the colony.

How We Handle It

We treat a band around the foundation on every visit, because that is the line the foragers cross. Inside, we use targeted bait placements and crack-and-crevice treatment where the trail actually runs, with different products than the ones used outdoors. We do not fog or broadcast product across a kitchen.

And we identify the species before we choose the bait, because with ants that is most of the job. Keep people and pets off treated surfaces until dry, about 30 minutes.
